For years the Main Stream Media (CNN, MSNBC, FOX News) have done pro-private health insurance propaganda about how single-payer Medicare for all is too radical, will cost too much etc. deliberately concealing the facts about the policy from the viewing public. Most people (to the extent they seek it) only get their information about who to vote for from these sources. A case in point regards the details of a single payer Medicare for all health care system (which most developed countries around the world enjoy).

Sorry to tell you, but the media have systematically lied to you about Medicare for all. This is not to accuse the media of ‘fake news’. Fake news is when the media spins some news event in a politically expedient way, in favor of one politician or other (Democrat or Republican). Fake news is real, and is a result of (Democrat) Bill Clinton’s 1990’s telecommunications act in which control of almost all media outlets in America was consolidated into the hands of five or six corporate distributors. Corporations now control America and what people believe to a large extent. The Clintons, Obama, Trump, Biden are all aware of this and have exploited/are exploiting it to their advantage as they see fit.

Prior to the coronavirus, when Buttigieg, Biden, Harris, Warren etc. spoke about the details of Medicare for all, there was no push back from MSM debate moderators. No one pressed Buttigieg about how you could lose your job and thus your health insurance, something Bernie had stressed. No moderators pressed Buttigieg about how he was part of a well known ‘stop Bernie’ coalition (led by Neera Tanden of the ironically titled ‘Center for American Progress’ etc.) and had taken money from many billionaires (including Seth Klarman and others, partly responsible for the development of the malfunctioning app in the Iowa caucuses). None of the moderators pressed Joe Biden regarding his misleading claim that Medicare for all would force people off their current health care insurance, when in fact this was an obviously disingenuous claim - it would force people from private health insurance onto a health plan where their coverage was much improved and was cheaper for them in the ultimate yearly scheme of things. Not only that, such insurance couldn’t be lost because one lost one’s job which millions are now suffering from due to the virus.

The American media’s failure to challenge empirically verifiable lies from politicians about Medicare for all just to take one example is not ‘fake news’ (i.e. a spin on the truth - a biased reporting of some actual event for political gain). Rather, it is a concerted propaganda disinformation effort, deliberately designed to deceive you about the factual truth.

Now that the coronavirus has dramatically exposed the fact that America has no health care system - instead it has a patchwork of private insurance companies whose raison d’etre is to deny coverage to as many people as they can get away with - the corporate media (paid in part by those private insurance and big pharmaceutical companies etc.) are in an apparent moral quandary.

They can admit that they have lied to the public and probably thus cause mass unrest in a society that thought they could trust the media. Alternatively they can go on propagating lies about the attractiveness of Medicare for all (even in an emergency situation like the present coronavirus pandemic), resulting in needless deaths. Whatever they do, they do something morally wrong.

Looking at the first horn of the dilemma (i.e. admit they have been propagating disinformation about single-payer Medicare for all); should they come clean? They could admit that they have been engaging in anti-Medicare for all propaganda. They allowed the lies of Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg and others about a single-payer system to go unchallenged despite their morally indignant tone in asking Bernie “how are you going to pay for that”? However, that would mean admitting that they were giving people false information in the 2020 primaries, resulting in people actually voting for Joe Biden.

Of course, no rational person is arguing about whether Medicare for all would have or would not have prevented the coronavirus in the first place (although Biden argued in the March debate with Bernie that Medicare for all would not have prevented the virus - a total non sequitur). The claim is that Medicare for all would help to ensure adequate funding for the health industry and enable anyone with virus symptoms to at least seek treatment and not be afraid of ensuing a crippling financial debt as a result of such treatment.

Looking at the second horn of the dilemma, should the media continue to propagate lies, or just not talk about single-payer Medicare for all? On this alternative, such a media strategy would effectively result in needless deaths. It would not help Bernie and others to get emergency single-payer legislation through Congress, in order to save the lives of thousands of Americans. Most members of Congress will vote according to what their corporate donors want, not what the people want and if the people are conned by the media into thinking that Medicare for all is a pipe-dream, they won’t demand it (by voting for it) even though it could save their lives during this pandemic.

Just to be clear, this second horn of the dilemma implies that every MSM news anchor/panelist etc. who has interviewed politicians about Medicare for all on CNN, MSNBC and FOX News and who has followed their corporate producers directives are like Hitler’s generals following orders. The corporate orders they have followed and continue to follow have resulted and will result in the deaths of Americans, and one should judge them accordingly.

In contrast, the proper journalists who tended to be objective on these networks and dissented from such orders (Phil Donahue amongst a few others, e.g. Krystal Ball) were fired. I am claiming that people like Brooke Baldwin, Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo, Rachel Maddow etc. are all complicit in the deaths of thousands of Americans because they will not expose the lies of corporate politicians who decry Medicare for all. They prefer to do what their bosses funded by e.g. private health insurance donors tell them to do.

On Tuesday April 7th, Chris Cuomo interviewed Joe Biden about the pandemic and the Dem race. Not once did he mention how Medicare for all saves money and lives. Instead the interview was a pro-Biden propaganda piece, the day before Bernie announced he was suspending his campaign. Needless to say, Cuomo didn’t mention the credible allegations of sexual assault (rape) against Biden by Tara Reade, which have been widely reported elsewhere). Nor did Cuomo push back on the fact that Biden was widely known to have talked of being in favor of in person voting prior to the Wisconsin primary (unlike Bernie who denounced in person voting). Biden (with Cuomo) was now claiming that his instinct had been that in person voting should not have happened in Wisconsin. That was another Biden lie, of the sort which Chris Cuomo (and the rest of his MSM colleagues) continuously have left unchallenged. People voted for Joe Biden because of people like Chris Cuomo.

Fortunately for the media, the question about whether to tell the truth about private health insurance or not do so and risk hundreds of thousands/millions of American deaths is not a dilemma. For the media, there are no moral dilemmas. In the context of health insurance, they just go with whatever story has the best outcome for corporations like Blue Cross Blue Shiled, Aetna etc. In terms of ethics they are consequentialists - as any decent undergraduate moral philosophy student knows, according to consequentialism there is no such a thing as a moral dilemma. One just chooses the lesser of two evils (in this case, they choose that thousands of Americans die) rather than telling the truth and admitting that a single payer universal health care system would be better than the status quo in America both financially and in terms of saving human life .

That’s the lesser of two evils from the perspective of the main stream media in the U.S.A. MSM - are you still going to tell us with a straight face that we have to choose the lesser of two evils and vote for Biden? When you (MSM) make the lesser of two evils choice regarding the apparent dilemma described above, Americans die. That’s hardly a glowing recommendation for the ‘lesser of two evils’ idea.
